Exceed Medi-Cal Income Limit?

By on | 1 Comment

Question: My husband and I are on Medi-Cal. It is possible that December's income will put us over the yearly limit. Then what happens? Do we owe back money?

Answer: If your income exceeds the Medi-Cal limit for your household, you will no longer be eligible for Medi-Cal. However, you are not required to pay anything back. It is your obligation to notify Medi-Cal if you expect your earnings to continue to exceed the Medi-Cal limit. Once your Medi-Cal coverage is cancelled, you will be eligible for subsidized health insurance coverage through Covered California.

We are 2 adults seniors ( 70 and 78 yrs) and our annual household income for 2016 has now been changed, i.e. from $16000 to $10000.

Since the income for 2016 at the time of submission was more than the permissible FPL limit, we were told by Covered CA that we are eligible under Covered CA. As such, we are getting APTCs through Covered CA.

Based on our 2016 IRS filed tax return , our annual household income dropped to $9500 , and for 2017 it is expected to be around $10,000. We informed Covered CA on this drop of earlier declared income who in turn told us that we are no longer come under Covered CA health coverage and are now eligible for Medi-Cal and asked us to contact Medi-Cal.

I would like to have your views, on the changed household income which is lower than the declared. Do we come under MediCal or do we come under Covered CA. what are the income limitations for eligibility under MediCal . Grateful, if you could assist me. We contacted Medi-Cal and they asked us to submit some Bank accounts information to verify , which is now being forwarded to them.

My pertinent doubt is: are we not eligible under Covered CA because of drop in our household income; and our eligibility is only for Medi-Cal since the income dropped and is below FPL limit? Am I correct?

Tks . Awaiting your response for guidance
