Premium Assistance Now or Later?

By on | 1 Comment

Question: Will the premium assistance lower my monthly cost or simply give me a tax credit at the end of the year?

Answer: Most people who receive premium assistance take it each month to reduce the net premium they have to pay. But that's not the only way to do it. You can also take a lesser amount monthly or none at all. In the later case, you will receive the remainder of the premium assistance you are due when you file your tax return for that tax year.

I have read Phil Daigle’s column regarding frustrated customers trying to get closure on various Covered CA issues including cancellation of their policies. I too, am in this same situation. Sent written cancellation in September 2015 to cancel coverage effective 10/1/15; could not get through via phone during their business hours and could not figure out how to cancel via their website based upon prompts, categories or search engine, hence written cancellation. Now have dual coverage via Kaiser Permanente effective 10/1/15 and my policy has automatically been renewed with Covered CA for 2016 without my permission or consent. Help! Who do I need to speak to? Are there any advocates who will help me or should I contact my elected senator and congressman? Per Covered CA they don’t accept written cancellations??? When were they going to notify me??? What about tax consequences I may be liable for that will be incorrect??? Let alone monthly premiums to Kaiser which might go to collection??? On 12/23/15 Covered CA advised via my phone call that they would cancel 2016 policy (do I believe them?) and would “escallate” my request for an exception concerning my cancellation??? Please advise who can help me get satisfaction. I am trying to do the right thing but work 9 hour days with a 30-minute lunch and have little or no time during normal business hours to address this situation. Thank you,
