SSN Doesn't Match? Impossible

Question: Why do I get a letter telling me that my husband's social security number doesn't match what they have on file? How can that possibly be?

Answer: At this point, Covered California's requests for verification are often nonsensical. I advise you to ignore this request for 2 or 3 weeks when hopefully you will be able to get through to Covered California on the phone and to remove this requirement from your record.

The info about the name on the card matching the way you have it on the application, unfortunately, seems to be correct. My SS card has my full middle name, but for years I’ve either used no middle or a middle initial. On my Covered CA application I used a middle initial. Which was fine for my first go around in October - but a reported income change forced a termination and a re-application. The re-app ran into new tightened up software release specs and got flagged for a no match with Social Security.

Long story, but here’s the punchline: normal channels will not clear this up. APPEAL. APPEAL NOW. EMAIL THE APPEAL.

Appeals go directly to the “Research & Resolution Department”. Have you heard of them? These folks are up the food chain, can fix things, deal directly with insurers, take your cell number and get back to you - you know, stuff that a customer service rep at the most basic level could do in the old pre-ACA days.

I would not ignore it, I would First Contact Covered california to verify infomation is in correctly, no typos and no transposed numbers, then if that is not resolved, call Social Security Administration, becuase sometimes their electronic verification is showing different. Make sure your name on the app is the same as it appears on your SS Card
