Can CC Enroll Family Members Different Plans?

By on | 5 Comments

Question: In Covered CA, do members of a family/household have to choose the same plan or can members choose different plans, whether they receive premium assistance or not?

Answer: Yes. Covered California can enroll “split families” (family members enrolling in different products and plans) with or without tax credits. Currently, the online system does not support split-family processing. These enrollments will need exception processing manually until Jan 1, 2014.

For our family of 3, I would like to choose a PPO Gold Plan for 2 of us, and the Platinum PPO Plan for another. Can this be done online or do I need to submit a paper application?

I just tried calling covered covered California and said if we had subsidy (tax credit) that we can’t get 2 different plans. I was told the system does not allow it. Does it allow it or not, and why am I being told that we can’t?

What will the rates look like for each individual? Is there a place to get a quote for split family rates? Does it look like the individual quotes or are they calculated differently based on the household income vs. each individual members income (between my wife & I)? Any clarification around this would be helpful. Also mentioned what that you needed “exception processing manually until Jan 1, 2014” - does that mean that after 01/01/14, you will be able to do this online? What changes. Thank you.

Does anyone successfully enroll each family member to different plan or different insurance company? How did you do? Just send paper application?

in the case that the family members choose different plans in different tiers, how can I calculate what the monthly premium is going to be?
