Any Private Insurance Left?

By on | 2 Comments

Question: After Jan 2014 will there be any private insurance left to choose from, or is everything under Covered CA and do we know if our doctors will be on any plan we choose and will they be required to accept all insurance plans?

Answer: Covered California has contracted with 12 private insurance companies to offer plans in the exchange marketplace, so all Covered California plans are private insurance as opposed to Medi-Cal which is public insurance. Covered California says it will have a consolidated provider directory including all private insurance company networks on their website on October 1 so you will be able to see which private plans include your doctors.

If they so desire, consumers may enroll directly with private insurers, bypassing Covered Calfornia. However, to get premium assistance, if you’re eligible for it, you have to go through Covered California.

Unless changes are made to the overall plan created by the PPACA, this is a question that should be reserved for about five years from now. As “private” insurance companies begin to lose money, they will exit the market — they, like all businesses, are in business to make money.

Most insurance companies do what they can to stop those losses from continuing, and when they cannot, they exit that line of business. Eventually, with only a relative handful of insurers, the likelihood of the implementation of a single-payer system becomes a strong possibility.

That’s not what Americans want today, but it may be what we are forced to accept in the not too distant future. Congress is working hard to turn America into a welfare state, and it makes me cringe.
