Question: I didn’t quite understand your recent answer regarding Medi-Cal and kids. My daughter is 18-1/2 and I would prefer her to be covered under the same plan as the rest of the family. If I declined Medi-Cal for her, would we simply pay the un-subsidized price for HER, or would the whole family become ineligible for receiving a subsidy ?
Answer: You would pay the un-subsidized rate for your daughter only. The rest of the family can be eligible for a tax credit.
You’re right Michael. Just sloppy on my part. Didn’t note the age 181/2. Trying to go too fast.
Phil, this is a similar situation as previously bantered with Max.
Are you suggesting the 18 1/2 year old would/could still be on the family’s subsidized health plan?
My impression is, per Covered California, that if a dependent child is Medi-Cal eligible and does not enroll in Medi-Cal, the rest of the family can only get a tax subsidy for a Covered California plan (subsidy based on total household size) if the child has other health coverage elsewhere (usually individual coverage elsewhere).
Covered California suggested that the dependent child, therefore, would have to have a separate health plan than the rest of the family.
If the situation is something otherwise, this would be great to know (Covered California not always giving the most correct answers right now, it seems, but they could have this one spot on).
