Question: My work provides medical insurance for families (3+ persons), however the rates are going up for 2014 and I will have to pay the difference. Can my 22 year old who works move to a Covered California plan, thus reducing my cost at work for 2 people only?
Answer: Your 22 year-old dependent can opt out of your group plan to purchase individual health insurance in Covered California or off-exchange, but she will not be eligible for a subsidy because the she has access to group health insurance through your employer.
don t forget the 9.5% rule ???? if the parent is claiming child will not fly. Child has not filed his taxes. More likely will fall in the medi Cal plan, but the 9.5 rule might fit in ?
Yes, you are correct. The 22 year old child can file their own taxes, thereby making said 22 year old independent (her/his own dependent) and ineligible for parent’s dependent group coverage, yet eligible for her/his own individual plan coverage. Then the 22 year old’s income will determine subsidy eligibility.
Phil is correct as well, should the 22 year old remain as their parent’s tax-filed dependent.
After reading this: does not make sense, the child is working ? wouldn t they file taxes? then no longer be dependent ? Please clear this up….???Can My Dependent Drop Group Coverage and Go to the Exchange.
