Insurance Agents Compensation

By on | 4 Comments

Question: With CoveredCalifornia, how do health insurance agents receive compensation if the individual has to go through the exchange?

Answer: Agents placing individual health insurance business in Covered California will be paid by the carrier who gets the enrollment, just as they do now. The commission amount has not yet been made public, but it will vary somewhat from carrier to carrier. In those cases where the commission is calculated as a percentage, it will be based on the entire premium amount - including federal premium assistance. Agents will have to be certified by the exchange and appointed with the carrier in order to get paid.

what i wonder, if we do help with the martketplace/exchange like Carrier Kaiser, I find it ? will pay us anything, since they dont pay for assistance going direct. Is that going to change ? anybody know that. ? I m here in Calif.

The question is not who is going to pay us, but what percentage they are going to pay us? Carriers and plans and premiums have been chosen in California, but no one is publishing premium rates or commission rates! Why Not? What’s the ‘secret’? We are 5 months away. How is a businessman to plan his business, if he doesn’t know how much he is going to make?

I feel it is critically important that insurance agents participating in this historic event have a good knowledge of how the program works: the relevance of adjusted taxable income, the difference between selecting a plan within the Exchange vis a vis outside the exchange, the cost effect of age and area of habitation, the significance of particular enrollment periods, the ability to understand and effectively communicate the benefits provided by the plans etc. Hal

why do you think the carriers are delaying before they say what commisions will be?

to a long term agent that sems very unfair to keep us twisting in the wind when Im sure they already know what they are going to pay. appreciate your comment
